Toledo provides single-stream curbside recycling in 96-gallon blue carts collected biweekly. Acceptable materials include paper, cardboard, glass bottles, metal cans, and plastics 1, 2, and 5. Recycling is voluntary but strongly encouraged.
Toledo offers single-stream recycling to residential customers through the Division of Solid Waste. A 96-gallon blue cart is provided and collected biweekly on the same day as refuse. Accepted items: mixed paper, newspaper, magazines, flattened corrugated cardboard, glass bottles and jars (all colors), aluminum and steel cans, plastic bottles and containers marked 1 (PET), 2 (HDPE), and 5 (PP). Caps should remain on bottles. Not accepted: plastic bags and film (take to retail drop-off), styrofoam, food-soiled paper, shredded paper loose (bag it), hoses and tanglers, small electronics, batteries (never in recycling, fire hazard). Participation is not mandated under a local ordinance but contamination (putting non-recyclables in the cart) can result in the cart being rejected at the curb. Lucas County Solid Waste Management District coordinates drop-offs for harder-to-recycle items.
Contaminated recycling: cart tagged and not collected until corrected. Repeated contamination: cart may be converted to refuse-only service at resident request.
