Vestavia Hills, AL Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

Vestavia Hills' sanitary department is required under Sec. 14-31 to operate and maintain garbage and trash collection, hauling and disposal service for every single-family residence in the city, and at the city's discretion, for single-family residences within its police jurisdiction; a separate framework applies to apartments, offices and commercial establishments, though not churches, which are billed as nonresidential users under Sec. 14-41. For residential customers, subsection (1) sets the core schedule: garbage is collected from single-family and multifamily residences twice weekly, and trash is collected once weekly.

Subsection (9) adds a weekly recyclables pickup, covering newspaper, aluminum cans, glass, plastic containers and tin cans, at no additional cost to the city, with the contractor supplying the collection containers. Garbage must be stored in a container meeting the Sec. 14-1 specification, a watertight 15-to-32-gallon receptacle with a tight lid, and containers that don't meet that standard simply won't be serviced. Certain items, fireplace ashes, rocks and dirt, and lot-cleaning debris, are never collected as garbage or trash under subsection (3). Nonresidential establishments get a heavier schedule under Sec.

14-41: garbage up to five days a week, Monday through Friday, with wet garbage collected on Saturday at the city's discretion, and trash at least once weekly up to five days a week. A resident who chooses not to use city service is not exempt: Sec. 14-18 requires self-haulers to dispose of refuse in a manner approved by the county department of health, at the same frequency as city service, and Sec. 14-19 routes violations of that duty to the county health department.
