Full Breakdown

Section 14-31(4) of the Code of Ordinances lists what the sanitation contractor will haul as yard-related trash and sets size limits for each category. Scrap lumber, plaster, roofing, bricks, sanding dust and similar building debris must be containerized, with each container capped at 50 pounds. Tree limbs cannot exceed four feet in length or 50 pounds in weight, and tree stumps are capped at 50 pounds as well. Limbs have to be separated from vines, and both must be kept separate from other trash such as leaves and grass clippings.

Reasonable amounts of these items go out with regular collection, but subsection (4) warns that excessive quantities trigger the extra-trip fee set in Sec. 14-32(c), rather than free pickup. Leaves get their own seasonal rule under subsection (12): the city's leaf machine operates only from October 1 through December 31 each year, and cannot run during extremely wet or freezing weather, so residents outside that window, or during a weather shutdown, must bag leaves and grass cuttings in covered containers or plastic bags to have them picked up on the regular scheduled trash route instead of by the machine.

General placement rules from subsection (5) also apply to yard waste: everything must sit within five feet of the curbline and never in the street or gutter.

Violations & Fines

Putting out more than a reasonable amount of limbs, stumps or building debris does not get you a fine outright; instead Sec. 14-31(4) routes the excess to the extra-trip fee schedule in Sec. 14-32(c), currently $50.00 per extra trip, payable in advance. Running the leaf machine expectation outside the October 1 to December 31 window simply means loose leaves won't be picked up unless bagged.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big can tree limbs be for curbside pickup in Vestavia Hills?
Sec. 14-31(4)(b) limits tree limbs to four feet in length and 50 pounds in weight. Limbs must also be separated from vines, and both need to be kept apart from other trash like leaves and grass clippings before collection.
When does the city run its leaf machine?
The leaf machine operates from October 1 through December 31 each year under Sec. 14-31(12)(a), and it shuts down during extremely wet or freezing weather. Outside that season, leaves and grass cuttings must go out bagged for the regular trash route.
What happens if I put out too much brush?
Sec. 14-31(4) says excessive amounts beyond a reasonable quantity are subject to the extra-trip fee in Sec. 14-32(c), which is $50.00 per extra trip, payable in advance, rather than being collected for free.
