Coconut Creek, FL Trash & Recycling: Illegal Dumping (2026)

Section 12-35 of the Coconut Creek Code lists three forms of unlawful disposal. Subsection (a) makes it unlawful for any person to throw paper, trash or debris on any vacant or unoccupied lot within the city. Subsection (b) covers streets, alleys, parks, canals, lakes and other public or private property: no rubbish, garbage or debris can be thrown there, and no garbage, tree or grass cuttings, or other substance calculated to cause an obstruction or nuisance can be cast into gutters, drains, canals, lakes or sewers. Subsection (c) declares it unlawful and a nuisance to deposit or bury trash, rubbish, brush, cans, boxes, oil or vegetable or mineral matter in any public square, street, alley, vacant lot, sidewalk, parkway, canal or waterway bank, park or right-of-way, or to do any act that will pollute or tend to pollute the waters of any watercourse or pool.

Section 12-28(1) bars placing rubbish and trash in any street, alley or public place of travel, or on private property other than the person's own property or swale. Section 12-28(2) prohibits putting rubbish, trash, garbage carts or trash bags on or over a storm drain. Section 12-28(3) declares any unauthorized accumulation of rubbish or trash on a lot, property, premises, street or alley a public nuisance. Section 12-34(b) makes it unlawful to dump, scatter or throw rubbish or garbage on a parking lot, and section 12-34(a) requires public lots with more than twenty-five spaces to provide at least one container for every fifty parking spaces. Section 12-31(b) requires construction and demolition sites to be cleared of accumulations on the same day work is done, and section 12-31(a) allows only the city's franchisee to haul that waste from any site in the city.
