Jupiter, FL Trash & Recycling: Recycling Requirements (2026)

Article III of Chapter 16 sets minimum recyclable material space standards for multifamily and commercial development. Section 16-71 requires collection and storage areas at 'all multifamily developments with ten or more units,' sized on a sliding scale: 40 square feet for 10-30 units, 100 square feet for 31-99 units, 160 square feet for 100-159 units, 240 square feet for 160-240 units, and 240 square feet plus one square foot per unit above 240. Exterior storage areas must sit at least 25 feet from residential districts or residential properties and be screened by a solid opaque enclosure of brick, concrete, concrete block or comparable masonry, wood or steel, with a metal gate and 24-inch shrubs spaced 24 inches on center.

Access must be designed so pickup trucks are not required to make unnecessary turning or backing movements. Multifamily buildings that already existed when the 1998 ordinance took effect are exempt if they receive curbside recycling service at least weekly under § 16-71(7). Commercial developments filing for a development order face a parallel standard under § 16-73: at least one storage area sized to meet 'a recycling goal of 50 percent' for the type of business operations, with the same 25-foot setback and screening rules. Applicants at either use type may substitute an alternative recycling plan if the town and its franchise hauler approve it.

Existing multifamily and commercial properties that retrofit to add these facilities may convert existing parking spaces to do so, subject to town staff review under §§ 16-72 and 16-74, with the town council weighing in only if the conversion substantially alters a previously approved site plan. All plans, new or retrofit, are reviewed by town staff under § 16-75.
