Long Branch, NJ Trash & Recycling: Recycling Requirements (2026)

Section 293-6 of the City Code makes source separation mandatory: owners, lessees and occupants of real property within the City must keep recyclable materials apart from all other refuse, and commingling recyclables with trash for collection is itself a violation. The City runs the collection curbside along dedicated, city-accepted streets, either with municipal crews or a contracted hauler, on a schedule set by the Director of the Department of Public Works; schedule changes are publicly announced. Six material streams are collected at the curb: newspapers, mixed paper products, glass, tin and steel food and beverage containers, aluminum food and beverage containers, and recyclable plastics.

Except for newspaper and mixed paper, these materials may be commingled in one reusable metal or heavy-duty plastic container with handles, capped at 32 gallons and 50 pounds; plastic bags are not allowed. Newspaper, mixed paper and corrugated cardboard must instead be bundled and tied separately, each bundle capped at 50 pounds, with no more than eight cardboard bundles collected per unit per pickup. Commercial, industrial and institutional properties must additionally recycle high-grade office and computer paper and corrugated cardboard. Each unit is limited to four recycling containers per pickup day; a property that regularly exceeds that limit can be told to arrange private disposal at its own expense.

the day before pickup, and empty containers cannot sit out more than 12 hours after collection. Once materials reach the curb or the drop-off center they become City property, and only the City or its authorized agents may collect them, though owners may still donate or sell recyclables directly rather than setting them at the curb.
