Ramapo, NY Trash & Recycling: Recycling Requirements (2026)

Ramapo Code § 235-9, part of the Mandatory Recycling Law adopted in 1988, states that recyclables shall not be placed in the same receptacle with other forms of refuse for removal to the Town's solid waste baler. Section 235-10 spells out the separation rules: commingled containers (glass, tin, aluminum and numbered plastics) and commingled papers each go into the recycling bin the Town provides; leaves go into biodegradable Kraft paper bags weighing no more than 60 pounds; cardboard must be flattened and secured, by insertion into a larger flattened box, tying or taping, before going into the paper bin; grass clippings go into biodegradable brown paper bags while brush, branches and trees must be cut into sections no more than four feet long and tied into bundles of no more than 60 pounds; and any tire left for pickup needs a Town of Ramapo tire removal sticker.

Ownership of recyclables set at the curb vests in the Town under § 235-10H, making it unlawful for anyone besides an authorized hauler to collect or remove curbside recyclables without Town permission, and § 235-10I confirms no one may pick up recyclables from the curbside even if the resident wants to donate or sell them elsewhere.
