Santee, CA Trash & Recycling: Recycling Requirements (2026)

Section 9.02.230 of the Santee Municipal Code sets the operating rules for the City's curbside recycling and organics program at the single-family household level. Every single-family residential householder must place source separated solid waste, recyclables, and organic waste in individual containers of 96 gallons or less capacity, sized and numbered so that nothing overflows the container during the period between pickups, and each resident must follow the placement rules the franchised collector establishes for those containers. Containers must reach the curb no earlier than 12 hours before the earliest regularly scheduled collection time and no later than 6:30 a.m. on the collection day itself, so a household cannot set bins out the night before with no time limit or wait until after the truck has already passed.

Residents must then pull each container back off the curb within 12 hours after the latest regularly scheduled collection time; when an unscheduled or unanticipated service interruption delays pickup, the chapter extends that removal window by an additional 24 hours so containers are not cited for sitting out during a disruption nobody could plan around. Santee's franchised or permitted hauler supplies the blue, green, and gray carts that keep recyclables, organics, and trash separated under this three-stream program, and the same container-size limit applies whether the household is putting out weekly recycling, organics, or regular trash.
