Ashwaubenon, WI Trash & Recycling: Recycling Rules (2026)

Section 18-3-11, adopted by Ordinance No. O4-4-26 on April 28, 2026 and current in the code updated through June 24, 2026, spells out exactly what has to be separated from the trash. It applies to occupants of single-family and two-to-four-unit residences, multiple-family dwellings, and non-residential facilities and properties alike, and lists fifteen categories: lead acid batteries, major appliances, waste oil, yard waste, aluminum containers, bi-metal containers, corrugated paper or other container board, foam polystyrene packaging, glass containers, magazines, newspaper, office paper, rigid plastic containers made of PETE, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP or PS resins, steel containers, and waste tires.

Section 18-3-12 narrows that duty in only three situations: when the postconsumer waste goes to a DNR-licensed processing facility that recovers the same materials in as pure a form as is technically feasible; when the material is burned as supplemental fuel supplying less than 30 percent of a facility's heat input; or when the Department of Natural Resources has granted a variance for one of the plastics or containers under Wis. 11(2m) or Wis. Admin. 14. Section 18-3-13 then sets a handling standard for whatever is separated: recyclables have to be kept clean and free of contaminants, food residue, oil, grease, household hazardous waste, medical waste or agricultural chemical containers, as practicable, and stored out of the wind and rain until collection.

This separation duty backs the twice-monthly curbside collection service described in § 18-2-27; § 18-3-11 defines what must be kept out of the cart, while § 18-2-27 runs the pickup itself.
