Ogden, UT Animal Ordinances: Chickens & Livestock (2026)

Ogden City Code § 15-13-41 sets minimum regulations for keeping residential chickens on any lot in the city. Subsection A restricts chickens to an accessory use on a single-family owner-occupied dwelling and bans roosters outright. Subsection B requires the rear yard to hold at least 2,000 square feet of non-paved open area free of structures, excluding the coop and run, and subsection C caps the flock at six chickens where yard space allows it. Subsection D limits the purpose to egg production for the occupants: chickens cannot be slaughtered on site or used for meat, an annual license is required for each chicken, and eggs or fertilizer from the chickens cannot be sold.

Subsection E requires a fully enclosed coop and a run enclosed on all sides including the top, with no free-roaming outside the two structures. Subsection F caps the coop and run footprint at 120 square feet and 7 feet in height, and bars scrap, dilapidated materials, or tarps for shading or roofing. Subsection G sets a 5-foot setback from any property line in the rear yard or from a dwelling on the same lot, and bars a coop or run within 25 feet of a dwelling on adjacent property.

Subsections H and I require secure feed storage with daily cleanup of spillage, and manure kept in composting or airtight containers with no open-air storage. An initial license application under subsection J requires a land use permit showing the coop, run, open yard area, and distance to adjacent dwellings, plus a compliance inspection before licensing.
