Ogden, UT Animal Ordinances: Microchipping (2026)

Ogden City Code treats microchipping as targeted, not universal. Under § 13-2-2(G)(2), any ferret licensed pursuant to the title must also be identified by an approved microchip implanted in the neck or shoulder area, with a number issued or registered by the division, making a chip mandatory for every licensed ferret in the city, unlike ordinary dogs and cats. Dogs face a mandatory chip requirement only in two specific situations: a dog or potentially dangerous dog registered under § 13-2-8 must be licensed and microchipped at the owner's expense as a condition of registration (§ 13-2-8(C)(2)(c)), and any animal quarantined for rabies observation must be implanted with microchip identification at the owner's cost before release from quarantine under § 13-2-5(F)(5).

A court may also order an animal found to be a public nuisance, dangerous dog or vicious animal implanted with a microchip and/or tattooed before release or relocation under § 13-2-7(B). For everyone else, chipping is optional: the § 13-2-3(E) fee schedule sets a flat $15 charge for microchip identification, available to any owner who wants the added identification without a legal requirement to get one.
