Bossier City, LA Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Section 18-163(a) of the Bossier City Code requires a master electrician, electrical sign manufacturer, or specialty electrician to file an application with the permit department and secure a permit before proceeding with the installation, alteration, or addition of electrical wiring or equipment on any public or private building, structure, or premises. Section 18-163(b) exempts three narrow categories from that permit: replacing lamps or plugging portable equipment into existing receptacles, work on signal or communications equipment by a communications agency, and work performed by a utility on its own generation, transmission, or distribution equipment.

Section 18-163(c) lets an electrician make minor repairs or additions costing $100.00 or less before securing a permit, but a permit and inspection request are still required once that small job is finished. Section 18-191 adopts the latest edition of the National Electrical Code by reference, with the amendments in division 3 of article III controlling where the city has modified it. Section 18-192 backs that up: where the Code sets no specific standard, compliance with the National Electrical Code counts as prima facie proof of safe construction, and equipment bearing an Underwriters' Laboratories label is accepted without further testing by the electrical inspector.

Permit fees run on a minimum $40.00 inspection charge under section 18-167, scaled to service size, from $5.00 for up to 60 amps to $30.00 for anything over 2,000 amps.
