Commerce City, CO Building Safety: Plumbing Permits (2026)

Section 5-4600 of the Commerce City Revised Municipal Code adopts the 2021 edition of the International Plumbing Code, including Appendix Chapters B, C, D and E, as the City of Commerce City Plumbing Code, save for the amendments the city has made. Section 5-4601 then amends that code's administrative chapter: Section 106.2 states that permit exemptions do not authorize work done in violation of the code, and that permits are not required for the specific work listed at Section 5-8 of the Commerce City Revised Municipal Code, while Section 106.2.1 gives an emergency exception, letting a contractor make emergency plumbing repairs before a permit issues as long as the permit application follows on the next business day.

Once work is under way, Section 108.1.1 puts the burden on the permit holder to supply any ladder, scaffolding or test equipment the code official needs to conduct or witness a requested inspection, and Section 108.2.3 bars work from continuing past an inspected point until the code official grants approval. Section 109.1 ties permit validity to payment: at the city's discretion, a permit isn't valid until the fees set by Article VI, Chapter 5 of the Commerce City Revised Municipal Code are paid, and an amendment to a permit isn't released until any additional fee is paid.

If a permit is denied or a decision disputed, Section 114.1 sends the appeal to the board of appeals under Section 5-21 of the Commerce City Revised Municipal Code.
