Commerce City, CO Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Section 5-4500 of the Commerce City Revised Municipal Code adopts the 2023 edition of NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code, as the City of Commerce City Electrical Code, with copies on file for public inspection at the city clerk's office. Because the NEC itself doesn't include permitting procedures, Section 5-4501 separately adopts Appendix K of the 2021 International Building Code as the electrical code's administrative provisions, and Section 5-4502 amends that appendix. Under amended Section K103.1, any owner, authorized agent or contractor who wants to construct, alter or change the occupancy of a building, or to install, alter, remove or replace electrical systems or equipment, shall first make application to the building official and obtain the required permit for the work.

Section K103.2 clarifies that exemptions from the permit requirement, listed at Section 5-8 of the Commerce City Revised Municipal Code, never authorize work done in violation of the code, and Section K103.3 makes every electrical contractor responsible for holding the state and local licenses the work requires. Once a permit issues, amended Section K106 lists the required inspections: underground inspection after trenches are excavated and bedded but before backfill, rough-in inspection after framing and concealed wiring are in place but before wall or ceiling coverings go up, and a final inspection once all permitted work is complete.

Section K106.1.1 puts the burden on the permit holder to supply any ladder, scaffolding or test equipment the building official needs to conduct those inspections.
