Avondale, AZ Business Licensing & Operations: Auto Repair on Residential Property (2026)

Sec. 14-180(e) sets four conditions for repairing a vehicle within a residentially zoned district: the repair must be 'customary and incidental to the principal use of the property'; the vehicle undergoing repair 'must be titled to the owner or occupant of the property'; the repair 'shall not exceed ten (10) calendar days'; and 'the painting of vehicles in any residentially zoned district is prohibited' outright, with no time limit or ownership exception. Together these conditions block a home from operating as an informal auto repair shop: residents can only work on their own titled vehicles, not a neighbor's or a customer's car, and even a legitimate personal repair has to finish within ten days or the vehicle becomes subject to the abandoned/inoperable-vehicle rules in subsections (d) and (f) of the same section.

Spray-painting a vehicle is banned in residential zones regardless of ownership or duration, pushing that work to a licensed body shop in a commercial or industrial zone. A business repairing vehicles for pay at a residential address would also need to clear Avondale's separate business licensing and zoning use requirements, since the residential-repair allowance in Sec. 14-180(e) only covers repairs incidental to living at the property, not a commercial repair operation.
