Laguna Niguel requires property owners to clear weeds over six inches tall and dead or dry vegetation within 100 feet of any home or structure. The annual weed abatement program runs with OCFA and sets a June 1 deadline.
Under Laguna Niguel Municipal Code Section 11-14-11, the city runs an annual weed abatement program with the Orange County Fire Authority to reduce summer fire hazards. Owners must remove weeds over six inches in height, weeds on the noxious/fire-prone list, and any dead, overgrown, or dried-out vegetation, plants, and trees within 100 feet of any home or structure. Each spring the Community Development Department pre-canvasses private properties, and all hazardous vegetation must be removed, thinned, or cut by June 1. New construction bordering hazardous vegetation must also meet OCFA fuel-modification standards under Guideline C-05. The fire code official may additionally require flammable vegetation cleared within 10 feet of each side of roadways (CFC Section 325).
Failure to clear by the deadline may trigger city code-enforcement action; the city can abate the hazard and bill the owner for the cost of removal.
