Fire pit rules in Laguna Niguel, CA — also called outdoor burning, recreational fire, or open flame ordinances — cover fuel types, clearances, and when burning is allowed.
Gas fire pits are allowed with clearances; wood-burning fire pits face strict siting limits and are banned inside fuel modification and wildfire zones. Rules come from the Orange County Fire Authority's adopted California Fire Code Section 307.
Laguna Niguel's fire code is the California Fire Code as adopted and enforced by the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA). Section 307 governs outdoor fireplaces, fire pits and fire rings at homes (Group R). Gas-fueled (natural gas or propane) devices are allowed when approved and designed to burn only a gas flame, with combustibles kept at least three feet from the flame column at single-family (R-3) homes and ten feet at other residential occupancies. Portable wood-burning fire pits with a spark arrester must sit at least three feet from combustible construction at R-3 homes, and solid-fuel burning is not allowed within 25 feet of structures. Wood burning is prohibited within a fuel modification zone or wildfire risk area.
Non-compliant fire pits can be ordered corrected or extinguished by the OCFA fire code official; penalties follow the OCFA fee schedule, and each day a violation continues is a separate offense.
