Pontiac, MI Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Pontiac's front-yard parking rule, City Code § 114-70, was adopted by Ord. No. 2076 and applies to every residentially zoned or occupied property in the City. Subsection (a) prohibits off-street parking of any vehicle within the front yard except inside an improved driveway that serves as an accessory use to the residential dwelling on the same lot, and it caps each dwelling to a single driveway. Subsection (b) supplies the operative definitions: the front yard is the area between the dwelling and the front lot line, bounded by the side lot lines, and extends within 25 feet of any side lot line abutting a street right-of-way where the adjoining property is an interior lot.

A driveway must be an improved, contiguous area aligned perpendicular to the right-of-way, built to the standards of §§ 102-106 through 102-115 of the Code, and cannot exceed in width the lesser of 20 feet or the width of the related driveway approach measured at the property line; the City Engineer may approve a different configuration where a heavily traveled street requires it for safe access under § 102-93. Subsection (c) makes the registration plate on a vehicle parked in violation prima facie proof that the registered owner is the responsible party.

Subsection (d) suspends the whole rule during an official snow emergency declared by the City, and subsection (e) expressly designates the offense a municipal civil infraction rather than a criminal violation.
