Pontiac, MI Parking Rules: Snow Removal Parking Rules (2026)

Pontiac's Article VI, Snow Emergency Routes, sits at City Code §§ 114-186 through 114-198 and is run by the Director of Public Works. Section 114-186 defines a snow emergency as three inches or more of snowfall within a 24-hour period as recorded by the U.S. Weather Bureau, and splits City streets into first-priority snow emergency routes, marked and designated by Public Works, and second priority streets, meaning everything else. Section 114-187 lets the Director declare a snow emergency by posting notice on the City website and in the City Clerk's office, after which local streets must be plowed within a reasonable time and salted if weather allows.

Section 114-188 lets the Director prohibit or restrict parking on snow emergency routes whenever falling or forecast snow, sleet or freezing rain makes plowing necessary; the prohibition stays in effect until the Director lifts it, except that any stretch between two intersections that becomes clear curb-to-curb is automatically excluded. Section 114-189 covers second-priority streets with an odd/even alternate-side scheme between 12:01 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.: on odd-numbered dates, parking is banned on the side of the street with odd-numbered addresses, and on even dates, the even-numbered side is banned.

Section 114-190 requires the Director to announce declarations by broadcast or telecast, and § 114-192 requires Public Works to post signs on every designated snow emergency route. A vehicle that becomes disabled on a snow emergency route must be towed or pushed off immediately under § 114-193, and Police may tow any vehicle parked on a route where the prohibition is in effect, stalled and not being moved, or interfering with plowing, under § 114-194.
