Westfield, IN Public Conduct: Outdoor Smoking Restrictions (2026)

Section 43-34 of the Westfield City Code prohibits smoking in all public places within the city, expressly extending the ban to any outdoor area within a reasonable distance of a regulated area. Section 43-36 defines that distance requirement: smoking is barred close enough to any smoke-free area that tobacco smoke does not enter through entrances, windows, ventilation intakes or other openings, and the code sets a floor of 20 feet as the minimum reasonable distance. The chapter's own definitions in Section 43-32 sweep in outdoor arenas, stadiums and amphitheaters as public places, and Section 43-33 applies the same rules to city-owned buildings, vehicles, parks, trails, parking lots and city-sponsored events anywhere in the city limits.

Limited carve-outs exist under Section 43-37 for private residences, a capped share of hotel smoking rooms, age-restricted bars, restaurants and private clubs, and outdoor areas that are themselves a reasonable distance from a regulated area. The Westfield Community Development Department enforces the chapter, including responding to citizen complaints and checking compliance during other mandated inspections.
