Dallas requires pool barriers of at least 6 feet in height, stricter than the 4-foot state minimum. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, swing outward, and have no openings greater than 4 inches. Door alarms are required for house-to-pool access.
Dallas pool barrier requirements exceed the state minimum. Pool fences must be at least 6 feet tall (compared to the 4-foot Texas state minimum). Gates must be equipped with self-closing hinges that automatically pull the gate shut from any open position and must latch automatically without human assistance. Pool gates must swing outward, away from the pool area. No opening in the barrier may exceed 4 inches. Alarms must be installed on all doors and windows leading from the house to the pool area. The barrier must be installed, inspected, and approved prior to plastering or filling the pool with water. These requirements apply to both in-ground and above-ground pools and spas. Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 757 provides the state framework.
Non-compliant pool barriers may result in failed inspections, fines, and orders to correct. Pool use may be prohibited until barriers are approved.
