Lynwood Municipal Code 11-12.5 requires every property with a swimming pool to enclose the pool area with a fence or building wall at least six feet high with no openings wider than five inches. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching. Hedges may not serve as the pool fence.
Under LMC 11-12.5(a), any owner or occupant of land with a swimming pool must erect and maintain a fence or building wall enclosing the pool area, with no openings more than five inches wide and a height of at least six feet (and, except where the wall is a building wall, not more than six feet). Section 11-12.5(b) requires any door or gate into the pool area to have self-closing and self-latching devices arranged so the latch cannot be operated from below four feet six inches above grade and is inaccessible to small children. Section 11-12.5(c) prohibits using a hedge or other plant material as the required pool fence. A fence building permit is required under LMC 11-12.2.
A missing, undersized, or non-compliant pool enclosure violates LMC 11-12.5 and can be abated by Code Enforcement. Gates lacking self-closing, self-latching hardware, or a hedge used as a fence, are also violations and expose the owner to liability.
