Lakeville, MN Trash & Recycling: Bin Placement Rules (2026)

Lakeville City Code section 11-18-11(E) exempts detached single-family dwellings from the enclosure requirements that apply to commercial and multifamily waste receptacles, but it still imposes placement rules. A household's waste and recycling receptacles kept outside the principal structure must be located in a side or rear yard, and specifically cannot sit on the side of a corner lot or in the rear yard of a double-frontage lot abutting a public right-of-way. Those receptacles must be set back at least 5 feet from every property line, half the 10-foot setback that applies to enclosed commercial dumpsters under section 11-18-11(B)(2).

The same exception structure covers small public-facing receptacles: individual bins of 60 gallons or less placed on commercial, industrial, institutional or public property for convenient public trash disposal are exempt from the enclosure rule entirely. All receptacles, enclosed or not, must be kept in good repair with secure lids under section 11-18-11(D), and a temporary bulk refuse container of 60 gallons or more used during construction is capped at 30 days within any 12-month period and must sit on an improved driveway at least 10 feet back from the curb or pavement edge without blocking a sidewalk or trail.

The Zoning Administrator handles complaints about a residential bin placed in a front yard, on a corner-lot side yard, or too close to a property line, and can require the homeowner to relocate the receptacle to comply with the 5-foot setback.
