Lakeville, MN Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

Section 3-8-6(H) of the Lakeville City Code requires every licensed mixed municipal solid waste and recyclable material collector to refuse to knowingly accept mixed municipal solid waste that contains yard waste, except when the hauler is delivering it directly to a composting or co-composting facility. Yard waste collection must happen on the specific day of the week set by the City's day-specific hauling map, the same map that fixes each household's regular trash and recycling day. Haulers may only accept yard waste that is placed in paper bags or other containers meeting the American Society for Testing and Materials Standard Specification for Compostable Bags, D6400, in a separate container not collected with the yard waste itself, or loose with no container at all.

Section 4-2-3(C) reinforces this from the resident's side, making it unlawful to dispose of yard waste in mixed municipal solid waste, at a disposal facility, or at a resource recovery facility, except for composting or co-composting. The Code's definition section, 4-2-1, defines yard waste as grass clippings, leaves, other organic garden waste, prunings, tree waste, and fresh-cut Christmas trees and boughs, but excludes garden vegetables and other material that will not readily compost within a calendar year. Violating either the hauler collection standard or the resident disposal ban is a misdemeanor under Sections 3-8-8 and 4-2-9.
