Lakeville, MN Trash & Recycling: Dumpster Rules (2026)

Lakeville City Code section 11-18-11 requires every waste and recycling receptacle to be stored inside the principal structure or within an accessory enclosure, unless a specific exception applies. Enclosures not attached to the building must meet several standards at once: the exterior walls must match the building's color and materials, stand at least 6 feet tall or 1 foot taller than the dumpster inside, whichever is greater, and include a maintenance-free front gate for access. The enclosure must sit in the side or rear yard, set back at least 10 feet from the property line, and it cannot encroach into a drainage or utility easement or a required buffer yard.

It must remain accessible to collection vehicles, and for multifamily residential, commercial, industrial and institutional uses, the receptacles must be fully screened from view of both adjacent properties and the public right-of-way, with landscaping added under chapter 21 to reinforce that screening. The Zoning Administrator approves the enclosure's design and construction, and required recycling space itself is set by the Minnesota state building code. Enclosures and receptacles must be kept in good repair, with secure lids and closed gates between pickups. The I-CBD, I-1 and I-2 industrial districts get a partial exception: recycling receptacles there do not need a full enclosure but must sit in a side or rear yard, stay fully screened, meet accessory-building setbacks and hold no putrescible material.

Temporary bulk containers of 60 gallons or more are capped at 30 days' use per 12-month period, placed on an improved driveway at least 10 feet from the curb or pavement edge without blocking a sidewalk or trail.
