Lakeville uses an open collection system: the City licenses private haulers but does not collect trash itself. Residents choose from licensed residential haulers (Buckingham, Dick's Sanitation, Nitti, Republic, Waste Management). The City sets service areas so haulers serve the east side Wednesday/Thursday and the west side Tuesday/Wednesday.
Lakeville does not provide municipal trash collection. Instead it operates an open collection system in which the City licenses several private companies to collect garbage and recycling, and each resident sets up service directly with a licensed hauler of their choice. Haulers deliver bins to new customers. The five licensed residential haulers identified by the City are Buckingham Disposal, Dick's Sanitation, Inc., Nitti Sanitation, Inc., Republic Services, and Waste Management. To reduce truck traffic and noise, the City Council established service areas that condensed hauler activity from five days a week down to two days per neighborhood: the east side is serviced Wednesday/Thursday and the west side Tuesday/Wednesday. A detailed service-area map is published on the City's Waste Haulers page. Residents should confirm their specific collection day with their chosen hauler, since the assigned day depends on which side of the City they live on. Every household must have one or more cans sufficient to hold the waste accumulating between collections, and the cans must be kept in good repair with secure lids (City Code disposal requirements). Questions about service can be directed to the City at 952-985-4400 or to Dakota Valley Recycling at 952-895-4559.
Using an unlicensed hauler or failing to maintain compliant containers can be a code violation. Refuse not stored in code-compliant containers, or accumulating more than one week, is a nuisance under Code 4-1-5 that the City Health Officer may abate, assessing the cost to the property.
