Lakeville, MN Trash & Recycling: Pickup Rules & Schedules (2026)

Section 4-2-5 of the Lakeville City Code governs how residents and businesses set out mixed municipal solid waste and recyclable material for pickup. Containers for both waste and recyclables must be kept as required by the property maintenance standard in Section 11-18-11 of the zoning code, and they must be accessible at the time of collection. Subsection C requires containers to be placed near the street, but not within the traveled portion of the roadway, and limits how long they can sit out: no longer than twenty-four hours at the designated collection time, meaning residents cannot leave bins at the curb for days before or after pickup.

Waste containers used for single-family detached dwellings are capped at one hundred gallons each, must have a bail or handles and a tightly fitting cover, and any moist waste must be drained and wrapped in paper before it goes in the can. Recyclable material containers supplied by the City remain City property and stay with the premises when a resident moves, and they may only hold targeted recyclable material, not other trash. Subsection D separately bans using mixed municipal solid waste containers as incinerators and bans burning solid waste in any bonfire or open fire. These container and timing rules sit alongside the mandatory collection contract in Section 4-2-2 and the antiscavenging protection in Section 4-2-6.
