Broomfield, CO Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Section 8-04-025, adopted by Ord. No. 2242 on September 10, 2024, restructured how the City and County of Broomfield handles residential waste. Subsection (C) addresses bulk items separately from the routine trash and recycling service described in subsections (A) and (B): bulk refuse material not collected as part of the city's collection services, as designated by the city, must be removed by arrangement with the city's contracted hauler, with a different city-licensed hauler, or by the resident personally, under the self-haul right preserved at § 8-04-027.

Neither the city nor its contracted haulers have any duty to pick up refuse that is not in a proper container or that is not placed correctly for collection, so a couch or mattress simply set at the curb without an arranged bulk pickup can be left uncollected. Section 8-04-025(A) also exempts sources listed at § 8-04-026, commercial and industrial properties, buildings of eight or more units, and homeowners' associations running their own group waste contract, from the city's residential program entirely, meaning bulk-item rules for those properties run through their own hauler or HOA contract instead.

Anyone hauling their own bulk waste under § 8-04-027 must still dispose of it in conformity with the city's rules and regulations, not simply drop it at any landfill or transfer station. Broomfield Public Works and the licensing office at the Broomfield City and County Clerk oversee the contracted and independent haulers that handle this work.
