Broomfield, CO Trash & Recycling: Dumpster Rules (2026)

Section 17-34-060(A) applies the refuse and recycling area standards to new and significantly remodeled structures that generate refuse; subsection (B) defines significantly remodeled as additions or renovations worth 50% or more of the structure's fair market value, valued by the chief building official using the county assessor's figure, with a right to appeal that valuation to the Board of Adjustment. Subsection (C) exempts single-family dwellings and multifamily buildings that have no central or communal collection, meaning the enclosure requirement in practice targets commercial buildings and multifamily properties with shared dumpster areas.

Subsection (D) requires recyclable storage space to be at least as large as refuse storage space, and subsection (E) requires containers to be clearly labeled and recycling areas located next to refuse areas for convenient drop-off. Subsection (F), the enclosure rule quoted here, then requires those refuse and recycling areas to be screened from public view with durable, compatible material such as masonry, with metal gates painted to match and kept properly maintained. The chapter was amended by Ordinance 1935, section 38 (2011), and again by Ordinance No. 2138, section 42 (4-6-2021).
