Gretna, LA Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Section 48-7(c) of the Gretna Code of Ordinances covers ordinary uncontainerized bulky waste: rather than going in a can or bag, it must be neatly stacked or securely tied into bundles that do not exceed four feet in length, two feet in diameter or width, and 75 pounds in weight, small enough for a collector to lift by hand. Section 48-7(f) covers the larger category the ordinance defines as bulky waste itself: large items with weights or volumes greater than what a container allows, including yard waste and furniture, but specifically excluding hazardous waste such as batteries and paint cans, which residents must dispose of another way.

Bulky items requiring boom truck collection carry their own limits: no single item can exceed six feet in length or 400 pounds, and the total pile of bulky refuse set out for a given collection week is capped at whatever fits inside a six-foot-square, four-foot-high footprint, which the ordinance itself works out to 144 cubic feet. The ordinance also directs bulky waste to be placed out specifically on the first scheduled collection day of the week rather than the second, and § 48-7(b) folds white-goods collection, appliances such as refrigerators and washers, into the same city service at a rate of four pickups per household per year.

Anything a household generates beyond these bulky-waste limits, such as construction or demolition debris, falls outside the city's collection responsibility under § 48-8 and must be hauled away at the resident's own expense.
