Gretna, LA Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

Section 48-7(a) of the Gretna Code of Ordinances puts collection responsibility on the city itself, whether it uses its own municipal forces or hires a fully qualified, experienced contractor, and covers reasonable amounts of garbage and trash from every private household residence and business establishment in the city, plus light tree debris and bulky waste from households specifically. Section 48-7(b) sets the frequency: each serviced unit gets twice-weekly collection of containerized solid waste, plus collection of bulky waste and collection of white goods, meaning major appliances, four times a year.

Section 48-7(e) fixes the operating hours and the weekly blackout day: collection cannot start before 6:00 a.m. and must finish by 8:00 p.m., and no collections happen on Sunday at all, regardless of how the rest of the week's route falls. The same subsection closes the loop on timing at both ends of the household's obligation: nothing may be set at curbside before 4:00 p.m. the day before the scheduled pickup, and any uncollected material that exceeded the collection standards, together with the emptied containers, has to be removed from curbside by 9:00 a.m. the following morning.

A garbage collection service fee funds this system, charged on city water bills since April 1, 1991 under § 48-9 and adjusted annually to the consumer price index under the city's collection contract. Small commercial accounts that produce five or fewer 35-gallon cans of trash per collection day can qualify for residential-rate service plus a $20.00 surcharge under § 48-15.
