Gretna, LA Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

Sec. 50-7 of the Gretna Code of Ordinances makes it unlawful for anyone to dump, throw, place or otherwise dispose of cut grass, weeds, trees, tree limbs, trash, garbage, or other debris on any public street, right-of-way, catchbasin, drop inlet, or pedestrian walkway in the city. The prohibition specifically names the method as well as the material: using a leaf blower, rake, broom, or any other means to push yard debris into a ditch, catchbasin or drop inlet is covered, not just carrying it there by hand.

The one way to stay on the right side of the section is speed: debris that lands on a street or right-of-way must be immediately removed afterward and containerized, either for composting or for proper removal and disposal. That immediate-removal clause matters for anyone doing routine mowing, edging or tree trimming along a ditch or curb line, since blowing clippings into the street is lawful only as a momentary step before bagging or hauling them away, not as a way to leave them for the storm drain or the next rain to carry off.

The section was added by Ord. No. 3460 on November 10, 2003, and sits in Chapter 50 alongside the city's other street and right-of-way rules, including the driveway width limits in Sec. 50-1 and the excavation-repair duty in Sec. 50-4. Separate from routine yard debris, bulky yard waste that a household wants the city to haul away goes through the regular bulky-waste collection channel in Sec. 48-7, which folds yard waste into the bulky-waste category collected on the first scheduled collection day of the week, capped at a six-foot square, four-foot-high area per week.
