Hoboken, NJ Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

Section 110-26 puts Hoboken on notice of when trash goes out: the days scheduled for garbage collection have to be advertised, at the Director's direction, in at least one local newspaper, and the same public-notice requirement applies to any later change in that schedule, which must also be advertised in advance before it takes effect. The rule gives residents and businesses a fixed, published reference point rather than a schedule set informally block by block.

Section 110-17A(5) then locks the schedule to actual practice: it is the property owner's responsibility to have containers placed at curbside for collection on the designated collection day(s) and time(s) only, meaning a container cannot sit at the curb on days when no pickup is scheduled. That duty sits inside § 110-17's broader container rules, which size the requirement to the building: premises with 10 or fewer units must use lidded refuse containers, buildings with more than 10 and fewer than 50 units may use disposable plastic bags only if space constraints prevent using containers, and every food or beverage establishment must use lidded containers regardless of size. Owners of any building must also comply with the separate recycling collection and storage schedule set out in Chapter 151, referenced directly in § 110-17A(6).

Enforcement runs through the Department of Public Works, and a container set out on the wrong day, or left out past its collection window, folds into the general Chapter 110 penalty at § 110-55: a fine of $500 to $1,000, up to 90 days in jail, or both, with repeat violations within a year drawing an added fine under § 110-55C.
