Hoboken, NJ Trash & Recycling: Dumpster Rules (2026)

Under Hoboken City Code Chapter 110, Article VIII, no dumpster or demolition container may be placed on a public street or sidewalk without a permit from the Department of Transportation and Parking, and the permit must stay visibly displayed on the container so it can be read from the sidewalk. Permits are issued for a specified period and cover one particular container at one particular location, so a contractor who moves the box or extends the job needs a fresh permit. Containers cannot remain past 5:00 p.m.

Friday through 10:00 a.m. Monday without the Director's written permission, and the Director can authorize a temporary no-parking zone for the spaces immediately in front of and behind a permitted container, except overnight between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. and on weekends. Placement rules under Section 110-37 require at least 25 feet of clearance from any intersection or crosswalk and six inches from the curb, with the surrounding area kept clean, the container never filled higher than four inches from the top, and covered between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. or whenever being transported.

Section 110-38 requires a state-assigned identification number, the responsible party's name and phone number, and reflectors with a four-foot iridescent stripe on each end of the container. The Department of Transportation and Parking enforces all three sections.
