Hoboken, NJ Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

Section 151-1 defines YARD WASTE narrowly to include only grass clippings, hedge trimmings, Christmas trees, twigs, sticks, branches and shrubbery, a separate defined term from LEAVES, which the same section limits to foliage from plants and trees only. Despite that split definition, § 151-2A(4) lists yard waste as one of the twelve designated recyclable materials every source in Hoboken must separate from ordinary trash, alongside leaves, cardboard, white goods and the other categories named there. Section 151-3A(1) then folds yard waste back together with leaves for collection purposes: both may be placed at curbside in a manner and according to a schedule promulgated and published by the City of Hoboken, with a uniform citywide set-out time of no earlier than 9:00 p.m. in the limited business area and 7:30 p.m. everywhere else, and only on the days the City designates for collection.

The chapter gives the Director of Environmental Services and the Recycling Coordinator authority under § 151-7 to set those collection days and sites and to publish them in the official newspapers or by mail at least 10 days before the first pickup. Unlike leaves, which § 151-3C separately allows residents to compost on their own property or bag at the curb, the code does not spell out an on-property composting alternative for yard waste; it is folded into the general curbside recyclables stream. As with every other designated material in Chapter 151, failing to separate yard waste from regular trash or improperly disposing of it is enforced under § 151-14: a Municipal Court conviction carries a fine of not less than $250, with each day of noncompliance a separate offense.
