Glen Cove, NY Trash & Recycling: Dumpster Rules (2026)

Section 239-15 requires anyone placing a roll-off container or dumpster on a Glen Cove public street to first obtain a permit from the Director of the Department of Public Works. The street must be at least 30 feet wide curb to curb, the container must sit parallel to the curb no more than eight feet six inches from it, and each container must carry at least 16 square feet of reflectorized diagonal striping at each end plus two-inch stenciled lettering showing the owner-lessor's name, address, phone number and permit number.

The container cannot block the sidewalk, and its contents must be emptied before reaching the container's waterline. Each permit lasts 60 days and must be renewed in writing every 30 days after that, and the owner-lessor must carry public liability coverage of at least $1,000,000 per person and $2,000,000 per occurrence, plus property-damage coverage of at least $100,000 per occurrence and $200,000 in aggregate, naming the City of Glen Cove. The Director must get 48 hours' notice before placement and can refuse or order removal of any container that poses a hazard from the street's contour, narrow width or traffic conditions. The owner-lessor is responsible for any street, sidewalk or curb damage the container causes.
