Glen Cove, NY Trash & Recycling: Recycling Requirements (2026)

Section 235-23 lays out exactly how a Glen Cove property has to prepare recyclables for the City to pick them up. Subsection A puts the sorting duty on each person within the jurisdiction of the City, requiring recyclables to be separated from other discarded materials, cleaned of contaminants, and placed in the designated recyclable containers, with any overflow secured in separate containers alongside them at curbside. Subsection C makes rinsing mandatory, requiring recyclables to be rinsed clean of all food residue or chemical contamination, and caps each curbside receptacle at 35 pounds total weight.

Subsection D applies specifically to newspaper: bundles tied with twine or bagged in brown paper cannot exceed 35 pounds or one foot of thickness, and papers cannot be secured with wire or plastic bindings or placed inside plastic trash bags. Subsections E through H set material-specific handling: plastic bottles and containers must be free of lids and caps, glass bottles and jars must likewise have caps removed, metal containers go in the designated container, and scrap or bulk metal is limited to four items per pickup location per collection day, with metal pipes capped at four feet in length.

Recyclables are placed at curbside consistent with the City's recycling schedule, and the City reserves the right under Subsection I to revise these preparation requirements with reasonable advance notice.
