South Fulton, GA Trash & Recycling: Dumpster Rules (2026)

Under Sec. 8 of the South Fulton Code, dumpsters and compactors are the responsibility of the property owner, who must keep them clean, disinfected and sanitary to prevent insects, vermin, vectors, or odors. New dumpsters installed after the ordinance took effect must be screened from view by a decorative masonry wall one foot taller than the dumpster on three sides, with an operable gate provided for collection access. In-ground compactors are screened by landscaping instead of a wall; above-ground compactors follow the same masonry-wall standard as dumpsters.

Temporary dumpsters brought in for construction projects or special events lasting less than 30 days are excluded from the screening requirement. The section also makes clear it does not replace or waive any additional conditions imposed under the city's building or zoning codes, so a dumpster enclosure may still need separate zoning or building permit sign-off. Placement is separately governed by Sec. 7(f): commercial and industrial dumpsters must be kept on the premises at a location approved by the city and readily accessible to collection vehicles.

Unauthorized use is barred by Sec. 9: it is unlawful to deposit trash in a leased, privately paid dumpster without the owner's permission, and scavenging or removing solid waste from any dumpster is likewise unlawful, since materials placed inside remain the property of the service company and the account holder.
