Old Bridge, NJ Trash & Recycling: Recycling Requirements (2026)

Section 429-6, first adopted in 1987 and most recently amended by Ordinance No. 2008-01, places every sector of the community under the Director of Public Works' mandatory collection program. Subsection A(1) lists the materials every household, multifamily building, commercial site, industrial site, institution, government office and office park must separate: corrugated cardboard from residential sources; co-mingled metal cans, glass and #1 PETE/#2 HDPE plastic containers; mixed paper such as magazines, junk mail, office paper and softcover books; clean textiles over 12 square inches placed in an MCIA-provided bag; brush and Christmas trees; bundled newsprint tied under 12 inches high; motor oil; leaves; masonry and paving debris; rechargeable batteries; scrap tires; and white goods, with any CFC-containing unit evaluated by a licensed technician before an EPA-approved reclaimer takes the refrigerant.

Subsection A(2) layers additional source-separation duties onto commercial, industrial and institutional generators only: electronics such as televisions, CPUs and monitors; mercury-containing fluorescent bulbs; stretch and shrink wrap and shopping bags at warehouses, retailers and supermarkets with 25 or more employees; and unfinished, non-chemically-treated wood scrap from new construction sites. Subsection B lets the Director of Public Works set the actual manner, days, times, bundling and placement rules for these collections, and Subsection C requires that every listed recyclable be kept separate from regular refuse handled by any private garbage hauler.
