Old Bridge, NJ Trash & Recycling: Recycling Rules (2026)

Section 429-6D declares that from the moment a resident, commercial business or institution places recyclable material at the curb under the mandatory program, ownership passes to the Township of Old Bridge. It is a violation for anyone other than authorized Department of Public Works personnel or an authorized garbage collection contractor to collect, pick up or cause the pickup of that material, and each such collection from each location is a separate and distinct offense, so a scavenger working multiple curbs in one night faces multiple counts.

Subsection E then lays out compliance duties by sector. Residential occupants of one- to four-family houses are simply responsible for source-separating the mandated items. Multifamily property management must provide dropoff or curbside collection for all mandated materials, keep dropoff containers clearly marked and large enough to hold materials between pickups, arrange for the recyclables to actually be removed and marketed, issue tenant notices every three months with copies to the Municipal Recycling Coordinator, and submit recycling tonnage reports to the municipality once a year. Commercial, industrial and institutional operators, covering retail, wholesale, restaurants, taverns, schools, warehouses, factories, offices and construction sites, must establish their own recycling system for all mandated materials, keep containers clearly marked, arrange for removal and marketing of the recyclables, notify affected employees and customers, and report tonnage quarterly rather than annually.

Subsection G lets anyone donate or sell recyclables to a third party for disposal, but that third party may never pick the material up from the curb itself.
