Section 74-30(a) of the Code of Ordinances puts yard waste on the same weekly route as household garbage, but with its own packaging rule: tree limbs, grass clippings, garden waste and shrubbery must be placed at curbside ahead of the scheduled collection day, and, except for material defined in section 74-32, everything has to be containerized rather than piled loose at the curb. That containerization rule is what separates ordinary yard waste from the appointment-only bulk program: section 74-32 covers tree and shrubbery trimmings that exceed eight inches in diameter or six feet in length, which the weekly route will not take.

Residents who set out empty carts, bags or cans after the crew has been through are on the clock too. on collection day, the same deadline the department uses for household waste under section 74-29(b). The department of public works runs the actual routes, and collection is folded into the same weekly schedule set under section 74-26 rather than run separately, so a missed cart at the wrong curb spot can mean a missed pickup for the whole load that week. Dead animals, industrial, hazardous and medical waste are called out separately in section 74-30 as items the city will not take at the curb under any circumstances, and construction debris or building materials fall outside this section entirely.
