Mount Prospect, IL Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Section 18.1303 of the Mount Prospect Village Code is the main list of places where parking is banned in the Village of Mount Prospect. Except when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic, or in compliance with law, a police officer's directions or an official traffic control device, no person stops, stands or parks on the roadway side of a parked vehicle, on a sidewalk, within an intersection, on a crosswalk, or anywhere official signs prohibit stopping. A second tier bars standing or parking, except momentarily to pick up or discharge passengers, in front of a public or private driveway, within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection, and within 30 feet upon the approach to a flashing signal, stop sign, yield sign or traffic control signal at the side of a roadway. The same section reaches 20 feet from a fire station driveway entrance, the opposite side of the street within 75 feet of that entrance when properly signposted, 50 feet from the nearest rail of a railroad crossing, and 30 feet from the curb points opposite the ends of a safety zone.

Section 18.1304 covers position and direction. Where angle parking is not permitted, a parked vehicle sits with its right-hand wheels parallel with and within 12 inches of the right-hand curb. On a one-way roadway a vehicle parks parallel to the curb in the direction of authorized traffic movement, with its wheels within 12 inches of the curb on whichever side it uses. Section 18.1309 forbids parking in an alley so as to leave less than 10 feet of roadway or to block the driveway entrance to abutting property, and section 18.1315 bars vehicles from any unpaved village right of way.

Section 18.1301B gives the Village Manager authority to prohibit stopping, standing or parking, or to set time limits, on village streets; those rules take effect once signs are erected and the street is listed in article XX, schedule V. Under section 18.1302, a police officer can order a vehicle moved or remove one left unattended on a highway for 24 hours or more. Section 18.1303B bars anyone other than a police officer from moving a vehicle into a prohibited area or away from the curb further than is lawful.
