Irvine requires all residential pools and spas to have protection fences per IMC Section 5-9-304 and the California Swimming Pool Safety Act. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching with latch mechanisms at least 5 feet above grade.
IMC Section 5-9-304 requires all existing swimming pools, toddler pools, and spas to be enclosed with a protection fence maintained in good condition. Gates must swing away from the pool, be self-closing and self-latching, with unlocking devices at least 5 feet above grade or accessible only from the pool side. The fence must meet minimum height requirements and have no openings that allow passage of a 4-inch sphere. A secondary barrier per HSC Β§115920-115929 is also required for new construction. Anti-entrapment covers on suction outlets are required for new or remodeled pools. Fencing and security must comply with city Informational Bulletin No. 187.
Failure to maintain pool fencing is a safety violation subject to immediate enforcement, fines, and potential pool closure.
