Montebello, CA Trash & Recycling: Bin Placement Rules (2026)

Section 8.12.270 opens with a general storage rule: solid waste and recycling receptacles must be kept at all times upon private premises out of sight from the street, except when placed at designated locations for collection. The section then sets distance limits by service type. Subsection A covers multi-family premises served by an alley: receptacles placed out for collection on the premises may not extend more than five feet beyond the right-of-way line of that alley. Subsection B covers premises served from the curb: receptacles must be placed within the parkway, or within five feet of the curb or the edge of the pavement, when set out.

Subsection C imposes a stricter rule on bin-type receptacles specifically, the larger dumpster-style containers rather than individual carts: they may not be placed, for collection or any other purpose, adjacent to any street or alley right-of-way, and otherwise must sit on private property no more than one hundred feet from a street or alley. Read together with the storage duty in the opening sentence, this means a resident or property manager cannot leave a cart or bin visible from the street between pickups; it has to be stored out of sight on the property and only brought to the curb, parkway or alley edge within the specified distance on collection day, then returned.
