Montebello, CA Trash & Recycling: Dumpster Rules (2026)

Section 8.12.260 requires that a solid waste receptacle be provided to every multiple-family residential, commercial and industrial premises in Montebello, while recycling receptacles may also be provided at those same premises, and all receptacles used in the city must meet the standards set out in the section. Subsection B is the operative dumpster standard for businesses: solid waste and recycling receptacles for commercial and industrial premises, and for multi-family premises that do not use curbside or alley service, must be industry-standard metal bins clearly marked with the servicing franchisee's name and telephone number, and clearly labeled with the materials the bin is meant to hold.

Every bin must be watertight, fitted with tight lids that prevent liquids from leaking, and appropriate for its intended use. Subsection A sets a companion weight cap for the smaller carts used by multi-family curbside or alley accounts, capping them at twenty pounds empty and seventy-five pounds loaded, and subsection D requires all solid waste receptacles citywide to use tight-fitting lids consistent with industry standards. Subsection C allows the city to approve alternative receptacle types for multi-family premises when using standard bins would be a hardship because of topography or lack of space.

Because these bins are supplied and serviced by the hauler holding a non-exclusive franchise under Section 8.12.020, a commercial account cannot simply bring in its own unmarked roll-off box; the receptacle has to carry the franchisee's identifying information and meet the watertight, tight-lid construction standard.
