Abington, PA Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Section 92-42(C) of the Code of the Township of Abington gives residents two options for leaf waste: place leaves in approved biodegradable bags for pickup on regular refuse collection days, or set leaves out loose, curbside or street side, for bulk collection during weeks the Township specifically designates for that purpose. For bulk collection, the ordinance requires leaves to be placed curbside no later than the Sunday preceding the scheduled collection week, and it separately requires that leaves stay out of the roadway and not impede traffic or interfere with stormwater, both independent conditions a resident must meet even during a bulk week.

This bulk leaf provision sits inside the same article that defines leaf waste at § 92-40 as leaves from trees and shrubbery, and it is distinct from the yard waste bagging and bundling standard at §§ 92-41(G) and 92-42(D), which governs bundled branches and clippings rather than loose leaves. The Township does not print a separate large-item or furniture bulk pickup program in this chapter; the only bulk collection language in the exported code applies specifically to leaf waste during Township-scheduled weeks. Because leaf waste remains a recyclable material rather than municipal waste under § 92-40's definitions, it must still be kept separate from bagged household trash even when set out loose for a bulk week, and a resident who dumps leaves into the roadway or blocks a storm drain during a bulk week violates the placement condition regardless of the timing requirement.

Enforcement runs through § 92-45's general recycling penalty, a fine of $10 to $300 per day before a District Justice, applicable to any violation of the article including improperly placed bulk leaves.
