Abington, PA Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

Section 92-2, part of the residential collection article adopted in 1974 and amended in 2009, splits Abington Township's refuse system in two. Subsection A puts the Department of Public Works in charge of collecting acceptable refuse from every single-family dwelling and from multifamily, apartment, townhouse or condominium buildings that do not exceed four family units, as long as the waste is generated on that same property. The Department is barred from collecting for retail, commercial or industrial establishments, or for larger multifamily buildings exceeding four units, except for the small commercial-collection carveout in Article V of the chapter.

Subsection B, added in 2009, requires those excluded properties, retail, commercial and industrial establishments and any multifamily or townhouse complex exceeding four units, to arrange their own collection through a private hauler permitted by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, disposing of the waste under the state Solid Waste Management Act and the Township's own Municipal Waste Program. Section 92-3 puts the burden on the owner or occupant to keep the property sanitary and to arrange lawful disposal if the Township does not serve that address, and § 92-4 has the Department separately collect recyclable material. Section 92-6 flatly bars scavengers, meaning anyone besides the Township or its authorized agent, from working the collection route.
