Avondale, AZ Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Section 28-33(l)(2) of the zoning ordinance states there shall be no signs, no exterior display, no exterior storage of materials, and no exterior parking of vehicles containing signs larger than six square feet, and no other indication of the home occupation or variation from the residential character of the principal building. That single sentence does four things at once: it bans a business sign of any kind outside the home, it bans displaying merchandise or work outside, it bans storing business materials outside, and it caps any signage on a business-related vehicle parked at the property to six square feet, above which the vehicle itself cannot be parked outdoors.

The rule exists because Avondale treats home occupations strictly as accessory uses, meaning the underlying residential zoning district, not a commercial one, still governs how the property may look from the street. Every other condition in Section 28-33(l) reinforces the same idea: the business must be invisible from any public way, and nothing about the exterior, materials stored on the lot, or vehicles parked there can tip off a passerby that a business operates inside. A contractor, consultant or online seller working from an Avondale home therefore cannot post a yard sign, hang a window sign, or park a branded work van with large lettering in the driveway, even though the business activity itself may otherwise be fully permitted.
