Oldham County, KY Trash & Recycling: Bin Placement Rules (2026)

Section 50.019 sets the placement rule that applies to every household cart put out for collection: solid waste in trash carts must be placed along the roadside or curbside fronting the subject property, with the lid closed and the opening facing the road, so carts cannot be left facing a driveway or yard. Bulky waste and green waste must be set on the ground apart from the trash carts rather than mixed in with them. Residential, agricultural, commercial, institutional and industrial accounts using larger stationary storage containers instead of carts must place those containers on private property in a spot accessible to the collection vehicle, not at the curb.

Section 50.060 puts the responsibility for having a container at all on the generator: every solid waste generator must provide, through their hauler, sufficient and adequate containers to serve each dwelling unit or establishment until the waste is removed. Section 50.061 then governs what goes inside: curbside carts may contain only tightly closed trash bags, and storage containers generally must be kept in a manner that prevents animal or human scavenging and illegal dumping and does not create a public nuisance as defined in the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance. Disputes over exactly where a contractor-supplied container should sit on a property are resolved by the Coordinator or the contractee under § 50.047(B).
