Ogden, UT Trash & Recycling: Pickup Rules & Schedules (2026)

Ogden City Code Section 12-2-2(C) governs how materials must be presented for pickup. Subsection C1 puts the burden on the customer to place all material for collection inside the automated carts the city provides, and requires that materials be arranged so the attached lid closes completely; no cans, boxes, barrels or bundled refuse outside the cart will be collected or may be left on the street, and nothing prohibited under Section 12-2-3 may go in a cart at all. Subsection C2 adds recycling-specific prep rules: only materials the public works director has approved for recycling belong in the recycling cart, large boxes and corrugated cardboard must be cut into pieces no larger than two feet by two feet, and recyclables must be placed loose in the cart rather than bagged or boxed, so the contents can be visually inspected.

Section 12-2-1(E) backs this up by giving the public works director authority to decide which materials qualify as recyclable and requiring the operations division to notify customers what can go in a recycling cart and how to prepare it. Enforcement has teeth: under Section 12-2-2(C)(3), once a customer has been notified of two violations within a 12-month period, a third violation lets the operations division swap in a larger or additional cart and bill the customer for it, or, for prohibited materials placed in a cart, remove the cart and terminate garbage or recycling service outright, with no reduction in the customer's monthly charge if only recycling is cut off.
