Oak Park, IL Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

Village Code section 20-7-1 defines yard waste as grass clippings, trimmings from shrubs, hedges and other vegetation, and brush, branches and limbs presented for collection under section 20-7-2, and defines a 'yard waste bag' as a thirty (30) gallon, heavy duty, kraft paper bag acceptable at a licensed compost facility. ' Limbs less than three inches in diameter and no more than two feet long may go in yard waste bags, and bundles of brush, securely tied and not exceeding four feet in length, may be stacked next to the bags for the separately scheduled yard waste collection; the Village will not collect bundles tied with wire or plastic cord.

Yard waste is only collected if a Village yard waste sticker, sold at Village Hall and through local vendors, is affixed to the bag or container. Larger quantities, such as logs and large tree limbs, must instead go through a special bulk pickup arranged with the Village's waste hauler. During the annual fall leaf collection period, leaves are not treated as ordinary yard waste and must instead be placed in yard waste bags weighing less than fifty pounds when filled and set in the parkway close to the curb, with the Village publishing the collection period's dates in a local newspaper at least a week in advance.
